From the Pastor

Greetings to One and All,

It is always my hope and prayer that this letter finds each of you physically well, mentally joyous and spiritually alive. We come to the end of summer and celebrate the festival of harvest that can be found in each life as we see renewal of school and our collective pursuits of excellence. May our daily lives also show that we have been blessed in all of our activities and that it is our desire to continue to share those blessings.

We begin each month with the celebration of communion, a renewal of our commitment made at the waters edge. For some this may seem old hat, for others it is a fresh day in our life and still others find that the recommitment is a time to review the opportunities that were enjoined and seeking forgiveness of those squandered times that we let pass without answering a call that was heard. Faith is the response of our hearts to the awareness of God’s love in our lives. It is not a commodity that can be added to our lives as the need arises. It is faith that allows us to give to God both our pain and our praise.  As we have shared our discipleship we have to ask ourselves, “When has my faith, although apparently insignificant, allowed me to do great things?”

In our better moments we acknowledge that God is faithful and to be trusted in all things. Unfortunately, we do not always live in our better moments. We seem to be continually surprised by the faithfulness of God, especially when we are confronted by it in the midst of our everyday lives. In our time and culture whom do we declare as clean and ready to come home? How do we set forth the table each day for those we are in contact with? At times we may find our faith being challenged.  We must guard against putting up a wall that keeps us from hearing the voice of the Spirit and responding faithfully. Being faithful alerts us to the fact that new times will require new forms of ministry.

As we journey daily with our faith, we find ourselves bombarded with a multitude of ideas, gifts, blessings, curses, facts and figures that have little or no value and ethics that are questionable. From all venues we can experience “the good, the bad and the ugly,” and there is never a time that all are available in quantities that can be overwhelming. If the scriptures are to have value in our lives, we must prayerfully and faithfully persist in allowing the Spirit to help us reinterpret them for our own day and time. An active faith will require us to pray and study as we shape the priorities of our lives, it will call us to all facets of our discipleship and how we live each day. It is my prayer that you will know that God is a just God and that there is no one outside of his grace.

Grace and peace,

David A. Jones III (Sam)

Request from Skylar Adams to Support Troops in Supply Drive

Skylar Adams is at OSU and is a member of the Air Force ROTC. There is an older Cadet who is putting together a supply drive for the troops and Skylar would like to invite Tulsa Central Congregation to help out too.  Skylar got confirmation he can collect until Oct. 7 when he will pick everything up at church.  The suggested supplies for donations includes: baby wipes, eye drops, foot powder, deodorant, Q-Tips, Disposable razors, travel sized shampoo & conditioner, sunscreen, Chapstick, dental floss, etc.  A more complete list is attached to the email that this newsletter was sent with.  Your help would be very much appreciated!

Women’s Group Meeting – October 2nd

The next meeting of our women's group will be Tuesday, October 2, 2007, at 6 PM.  It will be held at Jean Kerlin's home.  Our speaker will be Detective Cheryl Compton who is a Financial Crimes Detective with the Tulsa Police Department.  She will be bringing booklets for all who attend.  These booklets have a lot of helpful information in them.  We will "Brown Bag" our dinner.  In other words just make your dinner at home or stop by Wendy's Sonic, Taco whatever, and bring your dinner with you.  Jean will have drinks for us there.  Also, there will be a drawing for a beautiful homemade gift donated for this occasion.  Everyone there will get to put their name in the drawing.  In the following months we will have demonstrations on how to knit and crochet, flower arranging, and possibly a group drumming experience.  Hope you all will be there and join in the fun.  If you have an idea for a speaker or class just let Cheryl Kelley know about it.
