From the Pastor

I send greetings to each of you and, as always, it is my prayer that you are found healthy physically, mentally and spiritually.  Know that each of you is of inestimable worth in the eyes of God, and that you see each person in your life likewise.

The lessons during the season of Epiphany focus on the manifestation of God to humans, the call that comes as a result of that manifestation, and our response to that call. Discipleship signifies our realization of the revelation of God’s grace and our acceptance of God’s call.  Daily we are given examples of those who have experienced this process of manifestation, call, and response. This process is ongoing in each of you, as you live the life of the disciple.  This Communion Sunday offers an excellent opportunity for us to re-examine our desire to obey Christ’s call to discipleship and I would invite each of you to share at the table of acceptance and forgiveness. We are called to explore how God reveals the divine nature to us, it becomes important to examine the consequences of understanding that revelation.

This month we will see the end of Epiphany and the beginning of the Lenten season. Lent is a forty-day fast beginning on Ash Wednesday that marks the period of preparation for the Easter season. The number forty appears to be biblically significant. The forty-day fast of Lent mirrors Jesus’ forty-day fast in the wilderness and echoes Israel’s forty-year sojourn in the wilderness. Major themes of the Lenten season include repentance, self examination, and prayerful preparation.  On the first Sunday in Lent, all the lessons in the Christian tradition lift up the idea of what it means to call upon God.  We even are called to remember the story of Jesus fasting and being tempted in the wilderness.  Those who call upon the Lord are assured of God’s presence and gracious love, even in the midst of the trials of life. This assurance is not a guarantee of comfort and safety but rather a guarantee of sufficiency.

In each of you the presence of God resides and is waiting to break the silence from within you.  Allow yourselves this month to stretch forth in faith and share a hand in caring, witnessing or living a new testimony that has compelled you to a new understanding. May each of you be blessed always, is my prayer.

Grace and peace,

DAJIII (Sam)
